Telepsychiatry Effectiveness & Clinical Outcomes

Peer-reviewed evidence comparing telepsychiatry with in-person psychiatric care for depression, PTSD, and anxiety disorders.

  • Peer-reviewed Fortney JC, Pyne JM, Kimbrell TA, et al. "Telemedicine-Based Collaborative Care for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial." JAMA Psychiatry. 2015;72(1):58–67. doi:10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2014.1575. PMID: 25409287.

  • Peer-reviewed Fortney JC, Pyne JM, Mouden SB, et al. "Practice-Based Versus Telemedicine-Based Collaborative Care for Depression in Rural Federally Qualified Health Centers: A Pragmatic Randomized Comparative Effectiveness Trial." • Peer-reviewed Fortney JC, Bauer AM, Cerimele JM, et al. "Comparison of Teleintegrated Care and Telereferral Care for Treating Complex Psychiatric Disorders in Primary Care: A Pragmatic Randomized Comparative Effectiveness Trial." JAMA Psychiatry. 2021;78(11):1189–1199. doi:10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2021.2318. PMID: 34431972.

Evidence gap: Strong randomized evidence for telepsychiatry effectiveness in adult ADHD specifically is limited in the top three psychiatric journals. The strongest pediatric ADHD telepsychiatry RCT (Myers et al., the CATTS trial) was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. We continue to monitor this literature.

Platform-specific outcomes research

Peer-reviewed studies conducted by telehealth platforms evaluating their own clinical outcomes. We include these for completeness, with explicit disclosure of the conflict — they are not independent comparative evidence and should be read with that context.

  • Peer-reviewed O'Callaghan E, Mahrer N, Belanger HG, et al. "Telehealth-Supported Decision-making Psychiatric Care for Suicidal Ideation: Longitudinal Observational Study." JMIR Formative Research. 2022;6(9):e37746. doi:10.2196/37746. PMID: 36178727.
Longitudinal observational study (n=8,581 US adults) finding that patients treated through a decision-support-enabled telepsychiatry platform were approximately 4.3× more likely to achieve remission of suicidal ideation than untreated controls. Disclosure: This study was conducted by Brightside Health researchers and evaluated Brightside's platform specifically. We include it as platform-specific outcomes research, not as independent comparative evidence. Authors recommend the findings be confirmed by RCT.
